rhamphotheca: Black-headed Python (Aspidites melanocephalus)
This large python (max length 3 m) lives in a variety of habitats in northern Australia. They feed mostly on lizards and other snakes, but occasionally take small mammals and birds. They are oviparous (egg laying). The 2 species of this genus (the other is the Woma, A. ramsayi) are the only pythons to excavate their own burrows. They spend a great deal of time beneath the ground, and may venture out in either day or night.
